Joovv, a SoCal photomedicine pioneering company, was readying to launch its brand-new light therapy devices. The slick high-tech design, rave reviews, and positive clinical trials — everything pointed to a successful launch.
Except for a companion mobile app.
Compared to the latest hardware, the Joovv app had to catch up on so many fronts:
To make a real splash, Joovv needed a genuine next-gen app to accompany their next wave of light therapy gadgets.
lack of support for new hardware
outdated look & feel
connectivity technical issues
no engaging features for customers
Right from the start, we knew we weren’t solving just the design challenge. Besides a major design revamp, we had to enhance the app with advanced features, solve quite a few technical issues, and ensure its HIPAA compliance.
We ended up developing a brand new app that worked equally well with Joovv’s legacy devices and its brand-new hardware.
To make light therapy sessions more engaging, we upgraded the app with a few features:
goals setting
(sessions per week/month)
notification reminders
background processing & session recovery
We also had to tune up the app into working with the new hardware options:
display alarm clock & battery level
select ambient mode
retrieve session history from devices
To help the company coordinate its marketing efforts, we built a web portal where Joovv could:
manage users and notifications
review app usage metrics
sync user data with a CRM
manage firmware updates
While working on the user-facing app changes, we also had to solve some technical challenges.
First, we had to keep the app available on iOS and Android. Thinking ahead about the app’s long-term maintenance and support, we decided to go with React Native.
Another technical challenge was to keep the app compatible with the legacy devices while adding support for the latest hardware. To achieve that, we had to recover the BLE commands from the original codebase and reuse them in a clean new code.
We wouldn’t be telling the whole story if we skipped HIPAA compliance. The light therapy app pulls user data, e.g., height, weight, and birthdate, from Apple HealthKit and Google Fit. So we had to ensure its full HIPAA compliance:
end-to-end data encryption at rest and during a sync
Amazon Cognito for secure user authorization
forced data transit over secure TLS/SSL connections
On top of that, we had to make the app comply with the IEC 62304 standard that regulates security requirements for IoT medical software.
The Joovv app has become the last missing brick in the Joovv ecosystem, contributing to user engagement and guaranteeing premium service on a par with the company’s hardware.
We’re proud to continue helping Joovv push light therapy into the masses with their revolutionary high-end light therapy devices, helping people get healthier and happier.
As a result, the original light therapy app turned into something bigger: a personal light therapy assistant and remote control on the surface and a powerful marketing tool on the inside.
From a prototype to a full-blown app, we’ll help you hit the market in record time with a product that’s set to win.
While working on the user-facing app changes, we also had to solve some technical challenges.
